Three gunmen have fired at an Israeli bus travelling near the Egyptian border, wounding at least 5 people, according to Israeli media.

Israeli Army Radio reported that a second passenger bus had been attacked by gunfire shortly after three gunmen on a private car opened fire on a passenger bus near the Egyptian-Israeli border.

Israeli police spokesperson's office said "shots were fired at a bus on Highway 12 leading to Eilat from Mitzpe Ramon, near Netafim checkpoint", located approximately 20km north of Israel's Red Sea resort city of Eilat.

The police did not confirm the number of wounded, only that their injuries were "light to medium".

Security sources told AFP the gunfire appeared to come from the Egyptian side of the border, and came shortly after an Egged bus left Eilat, heading north. Egged is one of the largest bus companies in Israel.

Reports say most of the passengers on the first bus were Israeli soldiers who are residents of Eilat and were on their way from their respective bases to go home for the weekend.

According to Israeli media citing Eilat hospital spokespersons, approximately 10 killed - many wounded included six "light" and four "medium" - were wounded from the first bus attack.

Reports differ on the exact number of wounded on the second bus attack, some say as many as four are seriously wounded.

==> In addition to the shooting attacks on the buses, mortars were fired from the Egyptian border.

==> AP is now reporting bomb explosions in Beer Sheva. Four different areas of attack at this point.

==> Shortly afterward, IDF forces rushed to the scene and were faced with several explosive devices that were detonated alongside an IDF vehicle.

SANAA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Fighters of the Yemen-based Islamic fighters wing Wednesday regained control of the country's strategic coastal city of Shaqra in southern Abyan province after days of fierce battles against government troops, a provincial security official said.

"Islamic fighters in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) reseized the coastal city of Shaqra following days of fighting with the government troops," security official Hameed Ali told Xinhua.

"The city was cleansed from the militants in July by the troops, who then set tighten siege around the militants' key stronghold of Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan, which fighters took over late in May," he added.

Difficulties of communication with the army in the nearby area obstructed information about casualties of the clashes, said the official.

The fighters is known locally as "supporters of the Islamic Law." An intelligence official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity " the fighters killed over 300 soldiers in the past two weeks [more than 20 soldiers a day...! ] and seized 40 petrol barrels provided by the stationed army. "

Shaqra is the third town seized by Islamic fighters in Abyan, some 480 km south of the capital Sanaa, after the Islamci group took control of Zinjibar and Jaar city of the province late in May.

A tribal official in the area told Xinhua by phone the Islamic group is planning to take more cities in Abyan and Shabwa despite the fierce crackdown by the Yemeni army forces and U.S. continuing air strikes."
