From a scripting perspective they are similar, although performance and functional scripts interact differently with web pages.
The soft skill difference is having the ability to execute and analyze performance runs with a team of system administrators and then working through test iterations to determine the root cause of performance bottlenecks. Such a person needs to be a good team player and have the ability to lead discussions.

Job description
This position is responsible for executing software quality practices in a positive, challenging environment. It requires working under minimal guidance from Management, while working with other cross-functional team members in a project-oriented setting. The application scope includes internet based global solutions spanning eCommerce, Learning Management, and Contact Management as accessible through the internet, intranet and mobile channels with focus on the following:
• Develop & Maintain Test Plans
• Develop & Maintain Test Scripts
• Identify & Maintain Test Data
• Perform Software Quality Reviews
• Perform Manual & Automated Test Execution Activities
• Define and Implement Software Quality Standards
• Collaborate with Business Analysts, and Developers
All activities require communication, planning and technical competencies.
Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
• Bachelor Degree in Related Field –OR– Equivalent Experience
• Software Quality and Testing Certification is a PLUS
• Demonstrated ability to apply standardized software quality processes.
• Familiar with various testing methods and strategies
• Familiar with Software Development (SDLC) processes
• Demonstrated analytical skills using various tools and data sources.
• Demonstrated efficiency working on cross-functional teams of 8 or more team members including: Project Manager, Business System Analysts, Application Developers, and System Administrators.
• 3-5 years of combined technical experience within the following roles:
• Software Test Design and Execution (2-4 Years)
• Functional Test Automation Development and Execution (1-3 Years)
• Performance Test automation Development and Execution (1-3 Years)
• Application Software Development (1-3 Years)
Other Requirements
• Knowledge of the following technologies is beneficial:
• Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) – Source Control & Load Testing
• Microsoft C# .Net Development Language
• Microsoft SQL Database Server (MSSQL)
• Selenium – Automated Functional Testing
• Must be schedule and task oriented and able to drive coordination and delivery of software quality by working within established project schedules and release cycles.
• Must possess excellent verbal and written skills focused on communication and documentation in order to provide feedback to team members that improves technical and testing designs and solutions, and software fault issue and resolution.
• Self-motivated and customer-focused with understanding of highly-available, demanding solutions.

1. What automated testing tool do you use for functional testing? Selenium
2. What automated testing tool do you use for performance testing? Microsoft TFS
3. What scripting language for the automated scripts? coded in C# .Net
4. What percentage of time will the person be doing functional vs. performance testing? Common framework, likely 70/30 respectively. What type of C#.net experience do the candidates need? Apps development? Or do you use C# for creating testing scripts? C# for framework and scripts. I am looking for current experience w/good overall debugging skills.
