Senior  Developer
Stillwater Insurance Group has an immediate opening for a Java Software Engineer II in their Omaha, NE Office.
 
Key technologies are Java, Spring, JavaScript, jQuery, HMTL, CSS.
Foundation Framework is straightforward to pick up with decent JavaScript, HTML, and CSS knowledge.
Other technologies listed (SQL, FTP, network protocols) are in use, but not core to development effort.
Operating system knowledge needed (Linux, UNIX) is just command line navigation for viewing log files.
Separate sys admins and network admins – senior devs aren’t required to do that, but should know the Linux platform for troubleshooting purposes.
Version control systems in use are Affinity (on the AS/400) and Subversion (as a pilot).  Specific knowledge is not required, just knowledge of version control principles.
All roles are in the on-call rotation and participate in DR exercises when required, not just Dev IIs.
XML is used for data interchange, specifically the ACORD standard (an insurance industry standard).  Familiarity with either is desirable.
 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Write efficient well maintained code that follows company and industry standards.
  • Participate in the testing process through test review and support.
  • Actively participate with the customer to gather requirements and assist with design docs.
  • Allowed to work with a high level degree of creativity and latitude.
  • Expected to maintain at least one high profile project and multiple minor tasks simultaneously.
  • Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Troubleshoot system problems and issues and looks for ways to improve applications.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotations.
  • A Java Software Engineer will be expected to be flexible and adapt to the multiple tasks that are dispersed on a regular basis. 
  • Weekend and certain long holiday weekends can be used for mock disasters where we simulate an outage and verify our backup systems and documentation are up to date. Involvement of our level one Software Engineers will be requested when applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four year college degree or university program certificate, or two to four years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of the following: Microsoft windows, SQL, FTP protocols, Java, JavaScript, JQuery, Eclipse, Spring, Foundation Framework, Source Control Software, LINUX or Unix, network protocols and related components is required.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Proven knowledge with the following computer skills: Contract
    Management Systems, Database Software, Design Software,
    Development Software, Internet Software, Inventory Software,
    Spreadsheet Software and Word Processing Software.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly
    changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  •  Acute attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize projects.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams and  committees.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Creative, flexible, and innovative team player.
  •  Ability to work on complex projects with general direction and minimal guidance.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the basic principles, theories, concepts, and practices in the applicable area of engineering/technical specialization.
