Dick Cheney and George W Bush were widely condemned by Democrats for their baseless fear-mongering to pressure members of Congress into passing expansive surveillance laws that infringed on American's civil liberties. Unfortunately, with parts of their Patriot Act set to expire on Monday, the Obama administration is playing the very same game that its own party once decried hyperbolic and dishonest – even after a Justice Department reportreleased last week concluded that the expiring section used to collect Americans' phone records in bulk has never been vital to national security.

See if you can tell the difference between the Obama administration's statements about the renewal of the Patriot Act and those from the Bush administration when they wanted Congress to renew some of the controversial mass surveillance authorities they passed after 9/11.

"What you're doing, essentially, is you're playing national security Russian roulette ... We have not had to confront addressing the terrorist threat without these authorities [since 9/11], and it's going to be fraught with unnecessary risk."

"I think we have to think about the consequences that could flow from these kinds of events and developments ... the threat's very real. It's out there. And we need to do everything we can to make certain that we aren't struck again... And unfortunately, at this stage, I think there's some jeopardy ... as to whether or not we'll be able to continue those policies."

"These senators need to explain why they thought the Patriot Act was a vital tool after the September 11 attacks but now feel it's no longer necessary ... It is inexcusable for the United States Senate to let the Patriot Act expire ... we cannot afford to be without this law for a single moment."

"We must be vigilant in the face of terrorist threats, it would be irresponsible to let these authorities lapse, even for a few days ... If I lose these tools, it's a huge, huge problem. We use [this law] fewer than 200 times per year, but when we use it, it matters tremendously."

"No one should be allowed to block the Patriot Act to score political points."

"At some point, the political ambitions of individual members of the United States Senate are going to have to come second to the national security of the United States."

"We run the risk ... of essentially being less safe. I think that we lose important tools. I think that we lose the ability to intercept these communications, which have proven very important in cases that we have built in the past. I am very concerned that the American people will be unprotected if this law expires."

"Allowing this law to lapse would open gaps in our intelligence and increase the danger to our country. Our intelligence professionals need these tools to keep our people safe, and they need Congress to ensure that these tools are not taken away."

"The fact is, we've got people in the United States Senate right now who are playing chicken with this. They're in a situation where they're saying, we're going to try to just do...a short-term extension of these critical national security authorities. And to play chicken with that is grossly irresponsible."
